May 15, 2010 Meeting Summary

Nice weather contributed to a smaller turnout at this meeting, but those who were not able to attend missed the first Find of the Month contest... where almost any entry would have walked away with a silver half! I'm sure next month there will be a lot more entries.  Jim Rinehart won a silver half dollar for his entry in the relic category, an old oil lamp part that he found during the DFXonly hunt in Newark. Congrats, Jim!

The highlight of the meeting was Dave Lowy's giant tumbler.  He crafted it from some used parts and a five gallon bucket. This takes tumbling to a whole new level and it was great to see the monster we had only heard about and seen in pictures. Dave and Nick both discussed various tumblers and cleaning methods using them.

Anthony Crabtree found a silver dime still in the clod of dirt while hunting the park before the meeting. He waited to unveil it during the meeting and we all looked on as a 1940 Mercury dime came out of the dirt. Others did well hunting the park after the meeting, Dan Hudnell and Dave Lowy each found a silver dime and quarter. Dan and Anthony also each found some silver jewelry at the park.

We discussed moving the group hunt activity from before the meeting to after the meeting, and a show of hands showed that the majority were in favor of detecting the park after the meeting, so we'll start making this our new practice.

Polly Hull was the winner of the 50/50 raffle, taking home $22. Allen won the door prize of an Ohio Metal Detecting Magazine t-shirt.
